In this jet set age, here we are living thousands of miles away from our family, from our near and dear one, always thinking of beating the others to be first in the rat race. We have no time for our family, not even to ourselves. We are bound to work in the office almost 10-12 hours a day constantly sitting on a chair, sometimes more, doing very little physical work. We are suffering from a huge stress for various reasons like – improper work place, rivalry of the coworkers, indefinite future, inadequate future planning. We are forced to eat fast food- the junk foods with lots and lots of calorie. In the end, we are trapped and the size of our belly is increasing. Yes, stress can give you potbelly. Dr. Pamela Peeke is a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. She closely studied the association between weight gains with stress at the National Institutes of Health. She confirmed the fact- "There is no question that chronic stress can make you fat." When you are under constant stress, you cannot judge your actions properly. It is beyond your will power. You go on eating-sometimes under compulsion. Your stress does not let you go for work out. You do not feel like. This is again piling up the whole process. A vicious cycle is formed. When you are under mild stress, the central nervous system works harder to make the system of your body in the resting state. However, if the stressor is prolonged, and it cannot be controlled perfectly, our system fails to cope up. The level of the stress hormones- Adrenaline and Cortisol- increase by many folds. They give us energy for short term and help us to defend the stressed out situation. However, overload of stress over a long time can throw a person's resistance out of the track. Overload of stress hormones can give rise to many diseases. It includes diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, kidney problem and a weak immune system. For the older people who are already experiencing these problems due to there age, can reach in a peak danger point. Managing stress is particularly important for the older age group. Shedding the extra weight gained through overeating is not easy. When it is added with the risk factor of stress, the job is more difficult. Here are some of the remedies that you can try- Controlling of stress is by far the most essential factor. You can do relaxation techniques. Meditation and Yoga are the other therapy. Listening to music-the music therapy, as often said by the researchers, is sometimes helpful. Different notes are useful for different persons. It depends on individual needs. A general combination is percussion with the flute or the sitar. Try for workout everyday. Fix a suitable time and do not fail. Doing exercises for at least 30 minutes a day will remove the excess stress hormones. Learn to say “No”. It will save you from surrounded with untoward work. Get some sleep. Adequate sleep is necessary to get rid of stress. Lastly, go for a balanced diet. Do not overeat. Avoid junk food as far as possible. Make a schedule of taking you food. Thus, you will be able to avert the onus of getting overweight.
