Stress and Children

Six-year-old little Tom gets upset just before leaving for school. He frequently checks and rechecks his class routine and confirms about the copies to be taken for the day. His mother noticed that he studies the whole day but forgets everything when his teacher asks anything in the class. Therefore, he becomes more distressed and tries harder for the next day.

All these are the reflection of stress in the child. Anxiety and phobia come hand in hand. Mainly two types of anxieties are seen among children- Separation anxiety and Stranger anxiety.

Stanger anxiety-

This type of anxiety and stress comes first among children. Children feel frightened and cry when they are placed in an unfamiliar situation or person. This stress comes from a sense of insecurity. Nevertheless, this is good for the baby. It acts as a protective factor.

Separation anxiety-

When both the parents are working, their offspring suffer this type of anxiety. While mom and dad are away from the child, severe tension creates in his mind. They feel unsecured tremendously. So they become mentally unstable. Separation anxiety is seen in children aged four years and above.

How could you sense that your child is in stress?-

For the very tender group (up to 2 years of age) ---
Difficulty in feeding.
Becomes irritable.
Cries without any apparent reason.
Inadequate sleep.
For the Preschool age group ---
Gets angry without any obvious reason.
Complains of headache and pain in the abdomen.
Reduced appetite.
Does not obey command. Becomes scot free.
Fails to control emotion.
Day dreams.
Develops a nagging character.
School going age (all the said problem along with the following) ---
They are in constant tussle with their friends and teacher.
They lack in their concentration power.
Refuses to study.
Refuses to play. They make themselves bound in their room.
A serious problem is bedwetting.
Puts the thumb in his/her mouth continuously.
Always thinks about some bad thing is going to happen in his/her life.
Becomes extremely dependent to his/her parents.
Now some tips to the parents. Please remember the following-
Keep a close eye to the total rest time of your child.
Take some time from your schedule to spend with your child daily. Make it a regular habit. Spending quality time with the children help to develop confidence among them.
If you can figure out the real cause, which put him in stress, make him face the situation with your guidance.
Constantly tell him/her that you are with them. Always make them feel it.
You can discuss your low-grade problems with them. Share it with them. Give a patient hearing. This will increase his confidence.
Try to make him understand that life is full of joy and sorrow, tension, fear, loneliness and anger. He has to cope up with this. There is no point losing your confidence.

Most of the stress among children can be managed by the parents, if they have a good command of the child behavior and if they are taking proper care of their offspring. But if the problem continues, you must consult a child psychiatrist.
