Get rid of stress (Home) > Stress Effects > Music and Stress Relief Music and Stress ReliefStress can be relieved by music. The World federation of Music Therapy defines it as “the use of music and/or its musical elements in a process designed to facilitate and promote communication, relationship, learning, mobilization, expression and organization in order to develop or restore functions of the individual”. Does music really heal? Or does it just soothe? It might sound incredible but the body’s essential system (blood, hormones, glands, nerves, cells, muscles, organs, bones, brain) and the divine life-energy system are continuously affected by sound waves from the environment. Anxiety is a result of high adrenaline or cortisol (stress hormones) levels. The moment one listens to soothing music, the levels reduce and the patient feels more calm. The mind-body balance is restored thereafter. According to recent research, music counters all kinds of blockages, retention of bodily fluids, diabetes, arthritis, menstrual cramps and inflammations. It helps the development of communication and motor skills in children with learning or physical disabilities. It helps release vital healing hormones and combats stress and depression. It also shows impressive results in Schizophrenia. The basic premise of therapy is to reprogram the body and establish equilibrium. However, music therapy is not just for those who suffer from an illness. Even a healthy people can use music to reduce everyday stress through active music making like drumming or through passive listening. Hum your favorite tune whenever you are in the pits and need to bust your stress or boost your spirit, and you will feel better within no time. However, when music can range from the deafening beat of percussion to the lowest note on a stringed instrument, what does one choose? Actually, it depends on individual needs. A general combination is percussion with the flute or the sitar. Make sure the tempo matches the pace of the heart, which is 60-70beats a minute. It is important to remember the notes may have varying effects on different individuals. For example, a tune that resonates the belly of a lanky person might not work similarly to a human having protruding belly; the desired frequencies should be different to them. The foundation of all healing music is its undertones or sometimes called drones. Most drones are prolonged, continuous and undisturbed, the magic coming from the tone intervals. Most instruments like the Jaw harp, bagpipe, didgeridoo, sitar, chiming bowl, mountain horn, various single and multiple- stringed instruments can be tuned to certain undertones. According to some cardiologists, music works best when used along with Yoga or Meditation. As for an example, a person suffering from arthritis should combine music with regular exercise and meditation, while those with cardiac problem should opt for “Pranayama” with music. Some “ragas” are also effective during certain part of the day: “Bhairavi” and “Lalit” in the morning hours, “Megh” and “Malher” in the daytime, “Yaman” and “Bhopali” in the evening. Take your pick. To conclude, it can be easily told that music do have some positive effect on stress busting. Why do not we try it? After all, there is no harm doing so.
