Stress during Pregnancy and its relation to low birth weight
Pregnancy is itself a stressful condition, that too for more than nine months. Different physical complications arise throughout this period and culminate in to the delivery of the baby. Giving birth to a child is a time of radical changes in a woman’s life, in the biological, social and in the psychological sense. These transformations can add to personal growth and be wonderful, but they can also lead to mental disorders. We know that the occurrence of depression, both after the child’s delivery and in universally, is more in women than in men. In recent years, scientists have developed the concept of post puerperal depression (PPD). It is to such an extent that it is sometimes easy to think that PPD is a natural phenomenon in maternal life. It is commonly called “Maternal blues.”
It is considered a transitory phenomenon of mood changes that begins within the first few days after delivery. And if this period is conjugated with a very low birth weight baby, the situation becomes more critical.
Very low birth weight baby, when the birth weight of a baby is less than 1.5 kilograms, is likely not to survive for more than 72 hours without any institutionalized care. They do not posses the capability for normal breathing, their heart function is not good, and neither can they take milk properly. So, artificial feeding via intravenous fluid is essential for couple of days. When the baby stabilizes a bit, he is shifted to his mother for breast-feeding.
If the mother is a primigravida (first time mother), the situation becomes pathetic for her. The baby is so vulnerable; she has to take a lot of care. Experienced mother can handle the situation reasonably.
Then there comes the situation of proper nutrition when they come back home. The doctor may prescribe huge amount of medicines and other supportive gears. It makes the life miserable for the parents if they are not so affluent.
They have to take proper care of the baby’s nutrition and timely vaccination. These low birth weight babies are very much prone to infection and other diseases. They do not get the adequate feed during their intrauterine life. So, the amount of immunity that a normal baby gets from his mother’s womb is not available to them. Timely and proper medical care under a specialist’s supervision is essential for low birth weight babies.
All these matters pile up in the parents as a tremendous tension and stress. Moreover, there is PPD.
Prevention is better than cure. To alleviate PPD and the stress made out of raising the low birth weight babies, the first thing is proper care of the mother. She must be given adequate and proper nutrition during the whole period of pregnancy. Iron and Folic acid supplement is a must. Besides, vaccination against Tetanus is essential. Adequate sleep and rest helps to maintain the vigor. The mother should do proper free hand exercises after consultation from a specialist. Regular check up of the growing baby’s health is necessary. In case of any doubt, triple test and the other investigations should be done.
If the antenatal care is provided to the mother, the question of delivery of a very low birth weight baby will not arise at all.
